FREE2PLAY DISCUSSION - YOUR THOUGHTS?

15.02.2017   Category: Site news

VRC Pro can be played by everyone as a Free2Play game for unlimited time, with all spec chassis and some 8 public tracks and race in most of the weekly events. It seems however that although many try it out, few actually take the next step of purchasing an All-inclusive license (which start at 24.95 for a 3-months period) or a vEuro credit pack to purchase individual tracks, cars or components.

When new members purchase a VRC USB adaptor they gets 30 days FREE All-Inclusive access to ALL tracks and ALL cars and components so they have a 30 day period to try out everything and even compete in all events during that period. At the end of that 30 day period they fall back to Free2Play. I am wondering if this strategy actually works for VRC. Wouldn't that be enough time to decide if you want to continue with VRC Pro with a proper subscription?

An alternative could be to limit the number of free cars and/or tracks in the Free2Play package so new members can quickly try out if VRC will actually work OK on their PC before committing to purchasing the VRC USB adaptor and the free 30 days all-inclusive.

I welcome your feedback on this possible change of our Free2Play strategy.

get rid of subscription model all together. either that or charge a monthly fee of say 15 bucks, and keep all content purchasable. Go and look at Iracings model. i would emulate that. It works for them.

Thanks Robert

upload setup: yes would be nice to have such a feature, not sure how feasible this is, will look at it together with developers. One of the issues is that when you make on-track changes these will not be saved in a setup until you go to the Workbench and save the setup or create a new one. Problem with exponential settings is that some do it on the transmitters, others in the game itself. It's a very important setting though...

driver lessons: also good idea and involve members, maybe we can start a specific forum for it with different topics

time trial replays: will look at this, means more data to be stored on our servers of course...

This message is too long for this tiny message box so I don't know if it will show up readibly.

Just a question, have you done a market research? Which drivers are you aiming for and how do you reach them?

My obvious answer is that the top level drivers don’t show up here because they already know all they need to know and there is no glory or money (yet) to achieve in this simulator.

So is the aim the sport and club level drivers? It should be, but this is why I think you missing your goal.

Even though I consider myself a pretty experienced driver (started racing IRL -93) I was way behind everyone else when I began racing in VRC, mainly because I had to get use to the tracks and the perspective. I am stubborn as hell and when I have decided to do something I can keep going for weeks, months or longer to achieve my goals. It took me about three years to reach the top in VRC and I am still learning.

I don’t believe most drivers are as stubborn as me and here is some suggestion to keep drivers keep driving, at least this is what I wanted when beginning with VRC.

Setups - I think this is the most important thing. How do you know if you’re not driving good enough or simply having a bad setup? It can be hard to find a good setup and my feeling when beginning with VRC was that the top drivers didn’t share anything. My solution – If there is a public event the winner setup is automatically published (Preferably with fastest and average lap time). If a driver can’t agree with this condition – Don’t race or don’t win.

Another remark about this, it should be way easier to publish a setup, preferably from within a game. It is way too complicated to store it locally and uploaded it to the forum. And the forum should be able to handle both a image and a setup file. And another thing that annoys me as hell is why the setup comments are limited to 50 characters when the window hints it could hold at least 10 times as much.

Probably most people are driving with EPA, EXP and other enhancements on their radios too but that is difficult to request from anybody. At least to know that you have the same setup as the winner will make a big difference.

Time trials – Here, and only here (even if the conditions are same as in an official event), is where the fastest lap time can be set. These replays should be available to everybody for two reasons. We have seen people been cheating before in unbelievable ways so show us that there is no cheating going on. If the top result is possible to loop as practice it is too good to withhold from people.

Driver lessons – This is by far the most difficult thing to implement and there are so many aspects to consider. What I am primarily thinking of is some kind of guidance as in many other racing simulators which show you the optimal line, braking points and so on (I don’t play games so I don’t have any examples but any of you might have?). When it comes to offroad this will be complicated since you can choose different lines depending on driving style.

What I think you could learn drivers quite easy and what I have learned through this simulator is how to control your car in the air. For example some special section/track with jumps where you are learned to handle throttle, brake and steering in the air to control the car.

Last, but not least. Fix problems that people reports. For example you still can choose 70 000 oil in buggy, it has been a bug for a couple of months. A previous bug was that if you changed the diff oils in the pit it wasn’t the same in the setup sheet later. Don’t know if you have fixed this.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this discussion. There are certainly some good ideas to consider, the problem usually arises when you want to implement it. Some of them are easy like restricting f2p content, others like resticting km are much more complex.

Hi,

any Free2Play must be significant less attractive than any payed subscription. If one get everything for free why should one pay?

There should be some disturbances in using VRCPro for free like a randomly stop of the car or a sudden popup of a message that this is the Free2Play version.

I guess there are many samples out there where one can get a free trial period of using a tool or a program/application. Look around to get some ideas.

Cheers

As a racer, F2P got me to join because I could race low level events, and even the 2016 Worlds races, but was stuck with spec cars. Access to better races and cars made me decide to spend $.
18.02.2017 [20:53]
when I signed up there wasn't any such thing as a 30 day FREE all-inclusive offer after buying the USB dongle.

but as Vesa said I think it's fine as long as it's after paying for something! in fact it's probably much better marketing because people are happy they're getting a great bonus for free & then it gets them hooked!

Posted by: Vesa Inkeri (FI) on 17.2.2017 21:12:11 (UTC) Because if you have just mileage limit, every one can make million accounts.

yes, this is why limited time (or km) with all cars & tracks for new F2P member won't work.

better to have a promotion at some time during the year, e.g. Worlds, where everyone gets some premium content for limited calendar time (or maybe 1 day a month).

this is much better. it's good marketing and it can't be cheated just by making a new account (you have too many fake or dead accounts already).

Plus it encourages more entries in the Worlds which is great because we want as much top competition as possible.

F2P itself should normally be very limited. spec car with 1 or 2 very basic test tracks.

Personally, I agree Rhein Main is too much to give away free. I only paid because F2P tracks were so small & boring(bash pit, MHS1). Ok for initial testing but not much more. as it should be!
If I had Rhein Main & was allowed to race, I probably wouldn't have paid originally. So you need to get rid of that. too generous.

Posted by: Pieter Bervoets (NL) on 15.2.2017 15:44:07 (UTC) With Free2Play a new member should get a good taste of VRC, and when they like it they should pay, not continue forever without paying!

Look at the data. Then ask the question
Do people: a) play Free2Play for a short time & then just stop? Or b) play Free2Play forever?

If a) you need to give limited time access to MORE features (and/or better promotion/explanation/training) to impress them so they want to buy.

If b) you need to give LESS for free so they have a reason to pay for upgrade.
