2016 SEASON 1 1:12 SPORTSCARS ROUND 2 Orlando Indoor

09.02.2016

Report by J-P.Huhtala (VRC race reporter)

2016 Season 1 and round 2, Orlando Indoor

After start round from Bangkok, it was time these drivers to gather to Orlando. This track is located at Snowbird Hot Rod Hotel in Orlando. Few drivers who joined that season start, were missing. Also first round winner Billy Caley wasn’t at participants list. But like we have used to it, we got enough top drivers to give us a thrilling race. Bailes, Hasegawa, Raistrick, Yeung were few of those to watch.

QUALIFYING

Qualifying showed also magnificent speed but also, unfortunately many mistakes, also from these top drivers. Hasegawa took TQ only 0.19seconds gap to Raistrick. Hasegawa made one bigger mistake and it took about 3seconds away from his result. What was amazing, also this Britains laprobot Raistrick also collapsed to one mistake, this happened at lap before the last lap. Grahams mistake took 3seconds, so pace was pretty much same with Hasegawa. Expectations were starting to rise for a good final. Team USA driver Dana Bailes got third spot at the grid, Danas pace was hided, the result didn’t showed Danas true pace. He got 10seconds extra of those mistakes what he donned at qualy. Almost 5seconds gap to TQ didnt meant anything, if he could drive final without mistakes.

FINAL

At start of the final, it looked that Raistrick had some kind of hurry for the tone. He moved at the grid, and luckily he survived about that movement with reversing back to the grid.
When final started, Bailes showed his talent. After first lap, he was already at the lead, of course Hasegawa and Raistrick were close. After 10laps drive, Bailes continued his significant speed, and was gained almost two seconds gap to Raistrick.

At this point everything looked stable, Bailes, Raistrick and Hasegawa would decide this final winner. Hasegawas gap to Raistrick were almost second. At lap 12, Hasegawa got hold of his rhytm. He was driving very good laps, closing the gap to Raistrick and start challenging Graham. Bailes had gained his lead, margin to Raistrick was now over two seconds. But at lap 18, Bailes doned his first mistakes at turn 8 and 9. These mistakes allowed Raistrick to get the lead, and so he did. Next laps showed Danas pace, of course Graham was giving a hard time to Dana and they drive almost five laps side by side. Hasegawa was chasing these two, with one second gap. After many significant laps, battle ended to Dana.

At lap 28, those mistakes visit Raistrick`s team, turning to corner three, he cutted inside and collided with the wall. This mistake took 4seconds and Hasegawa got second place.
Bailes did magnificent job at front, he had gained his gap now 3seconds to second runner, Hasegawa. But if there was speed with Dana, also mistakes. Coming to turn seven at lap 32, he collided with inside barrier and Hasegawa was pleased to get first place. And this was amazing, once again almost same corner, next lap. At turn six, Bailes visit once again at inside wall, now Raistrick was smiling and got the second place. With those two mistakes Dana had loosed his three seconds lead and rhytm was gone, or was it?
Next five laps showed these guys talent, racing was absolutely fun to watch. Raistrick was pressuring Bailes and Dana was answering. But this guy was on fire, he drove consistently fast against Graham and at lap 41, turning to corner nine Grahams tiny touch at a wall decided this battle for Dana. At this point Hasegawa was about 2 seconds runaway from Dana.

Next few laps, don’t know was Hasegawa shaking a little or was the rhytm losted, but Dana gained very fast in few laps that gap and start to challenge Hasegawa. Ok, you can see from the replay, that theres few wide corners with Hasegawas driving and this allows Bailes to get closer with his tight driving. And then it came, start of the very last lap, Dana passes Hasegawa at mainstraight corner and doesn’t give any chances to Atsushi. Dana takes the win, only 0.3 seconds gap before Hasegawa.
Behind these three, to fourth place came Hong Kong`s Carson Yeung. He drove very fast and consistently, made one 3seconds mistake at lap seven. But in the end, he would needed one 10th faster average to challenge those leaders. Eventually there was no driver against him, at finishline he had over 6 seconds to leader and almost 8 seconds to behind, to 5th place driver Raphael Schiffer from Germany. Sixth place went to Icelands Eliasson and 7th place to Germany`s Vey. These three drivers, Schiffer, Eliasson and Vey had a good battle. Finally everybodys mistakes mixed up a little, and finally solved the order. Average laptime was guite same with all.
SPORT level victory went to Brasilia`s Sandro Lage and CLUB level went to Lee Passehl from USA. Sandro drove magnificent 45 laps result at sport final.
This race offered very interesting moments, and all races should be like this. Absolutely worth to watch.

Very cool to Jupe report !! Indeed, in the Sport class that competed was full of changes and alternatives. At one point I thought I would not win Ivan, who is a great rider.
