VRC PRO DOWN DURING PAST WEEKEND

23.09.2013   Category: Site news

From Saturday evening 9:30 PM till Monday morning 11:00 AM VRC Pro servers have been out of service due to a failing switch in the data center where our servers are hosted. Because this failure happened in the weekend it took more time for our engineers and the service people in the data center to isolate the problem and fix it.

After replacing the internet switch our services were restored. Fortunately, and as could be expected no data was damaged or lost. We apologize for this interruption. After 8 years of providing you with 24/7 on-line r/c racing (v3 and VRC Pro combined) this has been the first major interruption of our services. We will furhter analyze what exactly happened and how we can resume services quicker in case such an incident would happen again.

Changes to current Season 3 events
We have decided to cancel the second round of qualifying and extend the first round of qualifying for the following 2013 Season Round 6 events:
- 1:10 ISTC ROUND 6 at Snowbirds '13
- 1:10 ISTC ROUND 6 13.5T Spec at Snowbirds '13
- 1:8 SPORTSCARS ROUND 6 at Lloret de Mar
- 1:8 SPORTSCARS ROUND 6 Spec at Lloret de Mar

Is this switch problem related to poor update download speed? I was getting less than 100kb/s, typically 20-50kb/s (according to VRCPro download monitor), and thus takes a long time to get a simple update (12M took 15 mins). And a recent new install took 4 + 6 hours to download to my brand new PC. This is obviously annoying as each time we want to play we have to wait for typically 30 mins to get going (which is about the same time for us to drive to a local track). I hope resolution to this switch problem improve the poor downloads (which I already reported); and/or that VRC can look into resolving the poor download/update speeds. PS: I am based in Hong Kong which has great internet infrastructures as a world class city with no problems in getting any other internet content service/update data.

About the switch, as Brian has explained it is not just a simple switch but a piece of hardware that can fail. We have early warning systems in place but somehow I only found out some 15 hours later, mainly due to the fact that this happened in the weekend. We are reviewing our configurations and procedures to further improve the reliability. 1 Major break down in 8 years is not that bad of a performance...

VRC v3 has been terminated early this year, we have maintained the service for 2 1/2 year after the launch of VRC Pro. As you could not purchase anything in v3 since VRC Pro was launched and since there was an upgrade bonus for purchase made in the past 10 months there are no bonusses to be earned anymore.

Hope you all understand that we had to terminate VRC v3, it simply costs extra money and effort to keep it online. VRC Pro is what we have to focus on.

Graham, a Networking Switch is similar to a router that you would have in your home. (In fact, most routers have a switch built into them.) That's the part that allows multiple computers to talk to each other on the same network.

VRI - If I got a phone call that network connectivity was not working correctly, I would have been at my office to diagnose the problem. Whoever is hosting your connectivity could have done the same (assuming 24/7/365 uptime is part of your agreement with them)

Also, for our mission-critical applications, we have Link Aggregation Failover where the server is connected to two different switches, and our switching stack has the capability of assigning a new master switch in the event that the master switch fails.

Just a few things from an IT perspective that I feel your service provider should have. (Not faulting VRI here at all, and tbh, not faulting your service provider either. I know as well as anyone in IT that :stuff: happens and sometimes you just can't plan for all contingencies)

Hey.... it was nice to have a day or so off....watch a Grand Prix ....see the Doctor about withdrawal symptoms and panic attacks (because VRC Wasn't working).
Glad to see it was just a switch you had to flick to turn it back on (don't think so).
